Where to go on your next Aussie road trip

01 Dec 2023

When you're an avid explorer of the wild and rugged Australian outback, it's all about chasing the next thrilling adventure, uncovering hidden gems, and experiencing the untamed beauty of this vast land. But what makes a location truly great for an outback explorer? Let us help you figure out where to go on your next Aussie road trip.

We asked Bronson, one of our diligent and friendly checkpoint volunteers for his favourite locations. After three road trips with the rally family, it’s clear he has his favourite spots. Luckily for us, he was happy to share his top spots from 2021 and 2023.

Great fun with friends at the tip of Cape York

In 2023…

“Cape York would take the cake for the greatest location. Making it to the top was certainly something I’ve wanted to do for a long time! Great that it was on our layday, so we could all get there at our own pace and in our own way.”

This doesn’t surprise us – the number of people from our 2023 field who list Cape York as their favourite stop makes it clear it’s a fantastic spot. There was no shortage of great memories made in this location.

But what about other places? What else has Bronson liked?

Well, in 2021…

“The Simpson desert was also a massive bucket list box tick. With all the red sand, pubs, Beotoota and so much else, Outback Queensland is something else! Keen to see more of it next year!”

That’s a good reminder that we are heading back out west for 2024! We loved the Simpson Desert so much in 2021 that we couldn’t pass up heading back out there (and finally ticking off more of what we wanted to originally do for that year).

The iconic and unique sights seen in the Queensland Outback

So, what do most people look for when they think of great road trip locations for the rally? There are things like:

  1. Spectacular Scenery

We're talking about those sweeping red deserts, ancient rocky formations, dramatic gorges, and endless horizons. It's all about feeling small in the face of nature's grandeur.

  1. Untouched Wilderness

We're like modern-day explorers, searching for untouched pockets of wilderness, where you can enjoy solitude and that magical feeling of being alone with nature.

  1. Off-Roading Opportunities

We live for the thrill of off-roading! Great locations must offer challenging trails and tracks that test our 4x4s' capabilities. Mud, sand, rocks – bring it on!

  1. Starry, Starry Nights

For some, a great location includes nights so dark that the Milky Way lights up the sky like a celestial highway. Camping under the stars is a must, and a location with minimal light pollution is pure gold.

  1. Hidden Watering Holes

If 2023 taught us anything, when the outback sun is scorching, nothing beats a great watering hole. It's the perfect spot for a refreshing swim, a picnic, or just a break from the dust and heat.

  1. Adventure Stories

Every location should come with the promise of adventure. We want you returning home with exciting tales of our encounters, experiences, and challenges faced in the heart of the outback.

How much of this will we see in 2024 though?
