Update #2

We are well and truly into our first survey of the 2009 rally & cruise. We arrived in Weipa yesterday afternoon. Good to have an early mark after four 14 hour days in the car. Boy, this is a big country and it is hard to believe just how much of it I have driven this year. I am definitely ready to park the Ute up for a while after this trip is done.

We left Toowoomba and travelled North to Barcaldine, Muttaburra, Hughenden then onto a tiny little race course in the bush called "Oak Park". A bloke told me about this place several years ago and I have always kept it in mind. I went to investigate it as a potential overnight stop for next year. What a great find. It is an amazing set up with excellent facilities and loads of character, and all in the middle of no where. I don't think we will have the time, but I would love to use it for two nights if I can work it.

From there, we started mapping north through Chillagoe, Hann River and onto Weipa.

Road Conditions: While I can only comment on roads to Weipa, there has been nothing to worry about. I would have thought being the end of the season that roads would have been battered and bruised and in bad shape, but they are not. But, I am keeping an open mind as I am still 450km from the Tip, so the worst may be yet to come.

I was going to go into a little more detail about roads and conditions to expect, however I will wait until my next report, as then I would have seen it all the way to the tip and can give you a better description.

Quite impressed with Weipa and it will inevitably be an overnight stop. It has a couple of excellent function venues and ample accommodation for anyone who books early enough. Just unsure weather it will be on the way up or way back down.

The primary aim of the survey is to locate and secure all the overnight stops and have a look at the roads and conditions, particularly for the cruise course and spares truck etc.....

Off to Bamaga now then the Tip on Friday. Up there for a day or so working everything out and once sorted, we will start to head back South again.
